"Annabelle: Creation" boasts excellent editing, cinematography and sound design, but I think it benefited a lot from the eccentric tone. Much like "Lights Out", "Annabelle: Creation" is the fun kind of horror movie, one designed to make the audience shriek and laugh at the same time.
"The Vatican Tapes" is...just...there. It transcends both 'good' and 'bad', being the reason why the term 'mediocre' exists. I feel like I've seen it before in the form of every other possession movie.
"Demonic Toys" turned out to be surprisingly entertaining, offering all of the over-the-top gore, cheese and weirdness that I wanted out of the more popular "Puppet Master". However, I can already feel it dissipating from my memory and I noticed that the titular demonic toys became increasingly irrelevant as the narrative progresses.
"Puppet Master 2" is not exceptional horror and carries its own bag of flaws, but at least it was 'sometimes' entertaining and delivered more of what I expected from the previous one.
"The Lazarus Effect" is pretty bad, but the end credits seemed to start rolling almost immediately after the opening credits had ended. My first thought afterwards was: "Wow, that was quick".
"Annabelle" proves that the character of Annabelle only really works as support, as she isn't scary enough to sustain her own movie..Although to be fair, the lazy and formulaic script didn't do her any favors.
"Deliver us From Evil" doesn't contain a single original idea, other than maybe making Joel McHale into a bad-ass, but it takes those familiar possession concepts and blends them with the clichés of a gritty police drama. This mating of genres is fairy unique and it helps that they have chemistry together, making the film seem more original than it really is.
"Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones" is neither the best or the worst of the franchise and will probably be remembered as the most divisive. There is a lot of good and bad within it, but most viewers will probably latch onto the good or bad, making the movie seem much better or worse than it really is.
