1. “Above the Law (1988)” movie review.

"Above the Law" was designed to showcase the talents of Steven Seagal and it succeeded with flying colors. I'm not claiming that it's an exceptional movie, or even the most satisfying of actioners, but it was an excellent starting point as everything about it drew your attention to Seagal himself. I sincerely believe that if the spectacle or story were any more memorable, audiences would've talked about that instead of its star.

“Maximum Conviction” is actually fairly decent. However, Steven Seagal deserves none of the credit here. The weight of the feature is held up by the supporting cast, the writer and the director. If anything, Seagal kept "Maximum Conviction" from reaching its full potential. Then again, watching him play off of Stone Cold Steve Austin is...interesting. So his presence wasn't a total loss.

If you're even vaguely familiar with my reviews, you should know about my love-hate relationship with Steven Seagal, the man with iron double chins. When you think about it though, even his older movies weren't so hot. “Above the Law” and “Marked for Death” were full of unnecessary subplots and “Hard to Kill” (based on what I remember) had some awkward tone issues as well as uneven pacing. Yet since Steven Seagal himself was so cool, he redeemed these films until his coolness began to drown in an ocean of blubber. "Out for Justice" isn't any better than those films, technically, yet it also one of my favorite Seagal movies.
