I didn't think "The Green Inferno" excelled as a movie, as a horror movie or as an Italian-styled Cannibal movie. I don't really hate it, but I almost feel like that is worse, as it shows how detached and uninterested I was. I've enjoyed talking about it, but I felt very little while watching it.

"Hostel 2" feels like Eli Roth was only interested in the project for the money, as it lacks the hyperactive enthusiasm which accompanies even his worst films. So he played it safe, creating a harmless torture porn flick...and yes, I know how odd that sounds...But it has an effortless pace, a consistent tone and characters who aren't as likely to piss you off. It might not be as memorable as its predecessor, but it's also less likely to get on your nerves.

As an American, I've heard many of the "French are pussies” statements among my fellow countryman, especially around the time of the Iraqi War. Yet whenever I'd listen to these rants- maybe even reluctantly joining in myself- I would look around in fear. For what my fellow Americans don't know is that the French are the most terrifying and wrathful people in the entire world. My evidence? I've seen their horror films and they scare me. I, of course, have to presume that a countries horror genre represents the peoples mentality as a whole. Just look at today's subject, “Martyrs”. It is one of the darkest and most harrowing horror films I've ever had to experience.
  4. MOVIE REVIEW: “Hostel (2005)”

“Hostel” is a controversial horror film, but not controversial in the way that most horror films are. It's controversial because the horror fandom is split when it comes to its quality. Is it good? Is it bad? Is it a cult classic? Fans appreciated its originality, violence and tension. The detractors hated the tone, characters and probably were overreacting to the critics positive reaction to the film. I like “Hostel”, but I have no idea why the critics did because at its core, it's just another splatter film.
