1. “Detective Dee: Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010)” movie review.

Hark Tsui genre-bends like mad crazy, so wrapped in this cinematic package is: Mystery, intrigue, thriller, kung fu, politics, horror, fantasy, comedy and even a dash of adventure, as well as romance. Erm, you know what? I think I'm also just going to say it's what happens when you cross "Sherlock Holmes" with "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"...Yeah, I know that makes me a hypocrite, but that's easier to say and I am incredibly lazy.
  2. “Stake Land (2010)” movie review.

“Stake Land” isn’t a masterpiece. It doesn’t fully explore its ideas, but at least it HAS big ideas. This, Hollywood, is a fine example of C.R.E.A.T.I.V.I.T.Y being found in a film that’s made for the masses. Take notes!
  3. “The Ward (2010)” movie review.

“The Ward” was supposed to be John Carpenters' big comeback, a small horror/thriller that would be a return to his roots. Unfortunately, it was a bittersweet experience as you can see the Carpenter of old occasionally returning, only to be undermined by sloppy writing and questionable direction. “The Ward” isn't bad, but it's not very good either.
  4. “Julia’s Eyes (2010)” movie review.

This is a difficult feature to review, because part of me wants to praise its ambitions. "Julia's Eyes" wants to be 'more' than just a thriller and indeed, it is a much fuller experience than most of its ilk. It can be tear jerking and heart warming, along with being edgy and frightening. Yet it also sort of collapses under its own weight.
  5. “Burning Bright (2010)” movie review.

At most, it was pretty startling. At worst, it was mediocre. But at least "Burning Bright" tried to be something different, a trait rarely found in cinema these days. Really, I'm more annoyed at what it doesn't do instead of what it does, which should mean something.
  6. “Black Death (2010)” movie review.

“Black Death” caters to both the critics and the general masses, which is tricky to pull off. It's no surprise that some viewers have dismissed it as artsy and slow while some critics damned it to the pits of hell for being a popcorn feature under the guise of 'art'...
  7. “Bunraku (2010)” movie review.

It's stylish, unique and pushes the boundaries of conventional storytelling. It is truly an avant-garde action film. Or it's a self indulgent, overbearing, convoluted mess that needed to stop sniffing it's own ass because the fumes were clearly effecting it's better judgment. I guess that depends on you.
  8. Bunraku – finally a film that lives up to the quotes on the box

Wow, just... Wow. I don't mean that sarcastically either, which is quite the departure for me. When I see things like "BY FAR THE BEST FILM I'VE SEEN ALL YEAR", "A FEAST FOR THE EYES" and "BEYOND BRILLIANT" in bold capitals it's normally a sign that the DVD will be spending a lot of time sitting on the shelf before it's watched again. This wasn't the case here...
  9. Iron Man, Iron Man… Does whatever an iron can?

The Iron Man films didn't interest me initially, the same can be said for The Incredible Hulk which is still absent from my collection. However due to recent super hero movies catching my attention & them leading towards The Avengers it was time to gather the full set in preparation. Thankfully for my wallet both the Iron Man films are bargain bin fodder these days & the pair cost less than a single new release.
